PSS cancels classes Monday, Tuesday; some graduation rites are postponed
All CNMI Public School System classes today, Monday, and tomorrow, Tuesday, are canceled until further notice due to the approaching Tropical Storm Mawar, which is expected to swirl into the CNMI region within a couple of days. Typhoon Condition III is currently hoisted over the CNMI.
The class cancellations include Head Start/Early Head Start and Early Intervention programs.
Graduation ceremonies that were scheduled for today, tomorrow, and Wednesday, are also being postponed, according to PSS Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred B. Ada in an official memorandum yesterday afternoon.
Despite the class cancellations, all PSS school and Central Office employees, except 190-day contracted employees, must still report to work today, Monday, May 22, 2023, the memo said further.
The new PSS graduation schedule are as follows:
- Thursday, May 25 at 9am is Dan Dan Middle School promotion; 4pm is Da’Ok Academy graduation.
- Friday, May 26, at 9am is the Hopwood Middle School promotion; 4pm is Saipan Southern High School graduation.
- Saturday, May 27, is Tinian Sr. High School graduation at 4pm.
- Tuesday, May 30, at 9am is the Tanapag Middle School promotion.
- Wednesday, May 31, at 9am is Dr. Rita H. Inos Jr. High School promotion and at 4pm is Dr. Rita H. Inos Sr. High School graduation.
- Friday, June 2, at 9am is Francisco M. Sablan Middle School promotion; 4pm is Marianas High School graduation.
- Monday, June 5, at 9am is ChaCha Ocean View Middle School promotion; at 4pm is Kagman High School graduation.
- Tuesday, June 6, at 1pm is Tinian Sr. High School graduation.
In his memorandum, Ada said: “We understand that you and your family may be feeling worried or anxious due to the anticipated weather forecasts, and we thank you for your patience as we gather the most accurate and up-to-date information to help us make informed decisions. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios declared Typhoon Condition III for the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. As of today. May 21, 2023, there are no changes to the declared condition. However, we are monitoring the weather closely and are in constant communication with the appropriate government agencies.”
“We will continue to provide timely updates as the situation arises. We encourage everyone to stay calm, safe, and protected during this time. For the most accurate information on the weather, please refer to official notices from the Office of the Governor and Homeland Security and Emergency Management,” Ada said.
