PSS basketball, volleyball games set
The Public School System will resume its interscholastic programs that were postponed last week due to the damaged gypsum board at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
PSS Student Support Services athletic program director Nick Gross said they are planning to officially start the PSS Girls Interscholastic Middle School Basketball League today, and resume the PSS Interscholastic Girls High School Volleyball League tomorrow.
“We are planning on kicking off the girls middle school basketball season and resuming the girls high school volleyball season on Thursday. Fingers crossed,” he said.
When asked about updates on the MHS Gym, Gross said that repairs to the gypsum boards are ongoing, but the facility has been deemed useable and safe.
“Work is ongoing, but yes we are planning to use MHS as the venue for both the middle school girls basketball as well as the high school girls volleyball,” he said.
Volleyball games were suspended for a week, while the opening of the middle school basketball originally set for Sept. 18 was pushed back due to the issues with the MHS Gym. Inspections uncovered that the facility sustained additional damage on top of the ones caused by Super Typhoon Yutu last year, making the facility unsafe for after-school sports programs.
