The Public School System has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the National Governor’s Association to participate in a project called “Principal Effectiveness,” according to Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan, who announced the grant at a CNMI State Board of Education meeting last week.

The project is an effort to review policies regarding principal effectiveness in school districts, she said. The CNMI is one of the several states that have been identified to participate.

PSS will be working with Sarah Silverman, NGA’s program director for its education division, she said. The commissioner will establish a committee with the BOE chair and other PSS officials and principals.

Their work will include reviewing some of the data relative to “who we have in place in the Public School System” as well as PSS’ regulations and policies, she said.

NGA’S Silverman leads projects on teacher and leader effectiveness, according to NGA, which includes teacher and principal performance management and personnel systems and connections between early childhood and K-12 education.

According to NGA, she also helps state leaders identify and implement performance management strategies that ensure all students have access to high quality education.

NGA focuses on priority issues and deals collectively with its governors on matters of public policy and governance at the state and national levels, according to its website.
