‘PSS 4th graders to get field trips to AMP’

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) announced yesterday that 766 fourth grade students from Saipan public school will be taking field trips to the American Memorial Park over the course of this school year. The field trips are made possible by a $7,600 grant from the National Park Foundation, as part of its Open OutDoors for Kids program, which supports “Every Kid in a Park.”
The National Park Foundation, chartered by Congress, is the official charitable partner of the National Park Service.
“Field trips that get students out of the classroom and allow them to experience their community first-hand are an important part of our children’s education,” Sablan said. “We have some amazing resources [on] our islands, but not every child gets the opportunity to see them.
“Through the Every Kid in a Park program, fourth-graders will be able to engage with the natural environment at American Memorial Park, which includes not only the beaches, but wetlands and mangrove forest, and is home to endangered species. They will be able to learn about the scientific research going on at the park.”
“And, of course, students will also learn about the World War II battles here, how important they were to world history, and how those battles affected our own families, and took the lives of so many of our people.”
Through the National Park Foundation’s grants, more than 200,000 fourth graders nationwide will be going on field trips to national parks this school year.
“I can still remember the excitement of exploring my first national park as a kid and it made me want to discover more,” said National Park Foundation president Will Shafroth.
“I’m thrilled that our National Park Foundation grants make it possible for hundreds of thousands of kids to experience the wonder of parks for the first time, sparking a lifelong love for national parks.”
Sablan is a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, which is responsible for the National Park Service and America’s national parks. (PR)
