Northern Marianas College is reminding interested high school juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota that the registration deadline for the Project PROA Summer Camp is Friday, June 22, 2018. Registration is free and applications can be submitted online or at Project PROA in Room G1 at NMC’s As Terlaje campus on Saipan.

The Project PROA Summer Camp is a three-week program that aims to prepare students who plan on attending NMC for college success and to provide them with the opportunity to strengthen their ties to their cultural heritage with various activities and field trips.

Five organizations confirmed their participation in the camp, which will begin on Monday, July 9, 2018. These organizations include 500 sails, Carolinian Affairs Office, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, American Memorial Park, and NMC’s Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education, Services.

The camp will consist of two sessions. The morning session will be focused on academics and strengthening their English and math skills to help better prepare students for college. The afternoon session will be focused on other engaging cultural activities.

The activities that the participants will be learning include swimming, beading, weaving, cultural dancing, and Utt building. Additional activities will focus on learning the history of the Proa, Carolinian and Chamorro methods of navigation and sail, and the native agriculture in the CNMI.

To qualify for the camp, participants must be a high school junior, senior, or recent high school graduate and self-identify as Chamorro and/or Carolinian, per grant requirements. Interested individuals must be program eligible to participate.

Participation is free with lunch and snacks provided as well.

Seats will be on a first-come, first-serve basis so interested students are encouraged to submit their application or visit the PROA Center in Building G at the NMC Saipan As Terlaje Campus, between 8am and 5pm.
