A Superior Court judge found probable cause yesterday to charge a former mixed martial artist of beating up his girlfriend.

Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho ruled that there is probable cause to believe that the crime of assault and battery happened and that the 32-year-old Maitai Kapileo Charley may have committed the offense. Arraignment will be on March 13 at 9am.

The charge of disturbing the peace was dropped.

Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig served as counsel for Charley. Assistant attorney general Betsy Weintraub is prosecuting the case.

Police said Charley punched his girlfriend several times on the right arm and on the back, choked her, and threw an unopened can of beer in her face. The suspect allegedly beat up the victim in the bedroom of their house in Garapan last Feb. 25.
