Pretty in Pink 35K Mountain Bike Race a success
In an effort to promote awareness about breast cancer and the importance of preventative health care, the Bikers Association of Tinian and the Pretty in Pink Foundation held their 3rd Annual “Pedal for Progress” 35K Mountain Bike Race last Saturday, Oct. 3.
All registered participants for this year’s event were given the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the chance to win a brand new Cannondale mountain bike and an all pink bike donated by Triple J. This year’s event had over 50 registered participants.
Tinian’s mountain bike riders came out in full support donning neon pink T-shirts during the race. The race, which began at 7am at Kammer Beach, took the riders on a tour around the island on Tinian’s old military- paved roads.
This year’s overall Top 3 male riders were Charlie Cabreros and Rhenmer Remilosa who both came in at 1:20:15. Winston Omar followed thereafter with a time of 1:21:45. In the women’s division, Kimberlyn King-Hinds came in first at 1:28:30 followed by Felicia Reynolds (1:43:31) and Maggie Sarmiento (1:58:32).
After the race, Pretty in Pink Tinian organizer Margo Gifford handed out over 200 breast self-exam kits. The kits were purchased from the $3,500 that was raised during last year’s mountain bike race. Gifford, a breast cancer survivor, demonstrated how to use the self-exam kits and expressed the importance of early detection, most especially for surviving breast cancer. Serafina King-Nabors, also a breast cancer survivor, encouraged both men and women the importance of annual physicals and preventative health maintenance.
BAT president Dawn Sarmiento, race organizer Richard Lazaro, and Pretty in Pink Tinian representative Margo Gifford extends their sincere appreciation to the Tinian Mayor’s Office, Tinian Municipal Council, JC Café, Taro Sue, Coca Cola, MarPac, Tinian Elementary School, Star Marianas Air, IT&E, Bali Fashion, Triple J, Bank of Guam, Island Apparel, Zack CD Rack, Pastor Connie and Grace Christian Academy, Serafina King-Nabors, Kimberlyn King-Hinds, Derek Gifford, Dr. Aldan, Don Power, Marianas Visitors Authority, Jeff Barr, and all the volunteers, for their continued support and sponsorship of this year’s event.
