A bill renaming the Port of Tinian after the late Tinian mayor Jose Pangelinan San Nicolas passed the Senate last Friday.

Recognizing that the harbor was a “significant area to the wellbeing and economic stability for residents and visitors to the Second Senatorial District,” Sen. Jude Hofschneider (R-Tinian) introduced the bill, which was cosponsored by Sens. Francisco Cruz (R-Tinian) and Francisco M. Borja (R-Tinian), who was also a former mayor of Tinian.

San Nicolas passed away at the age of 67 back in 2013 after having open-heart surgery in the Philippines. He served as Tinian mayor from 2006 to 2010

A few of San Nicolas’ accomplishments include the erection of SN-5 Shipping Company back in 1990, which is a company that had the intention to provide Tinian residents with cheaper alternatives to imported dried goods, raw materials, vehicles, and other essential commodities.

To this day, SN-5 still continues operation.

The Tinian Harbor, which was constructed during World War II and is also known as the Tinian Harbor, sustained damage and deterioration, causing it to be dangerous to the residents. Back in 2006,San Nicholas declared Tinian to be on a state of emergency after finding out that the Tinian Harbor was damaged due to the Tinian outer seawall.

The House has yet to act on the bill.
