POJC Team Event starts today

The CNMI-led North Pacific squad will begin its campaign in the 2016 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships Team Event today in Fiji.

Day 1 will have North Pacific’s U12 squad battling East Pacific, which is made up of Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga players. The Commonwealth is represented by Daniel Kang, Anthony Gregoire, and Hye Jin Elliot in the boys and girls divisions of the U12 singles and doubles competitions and will be joined by players from Guam and the Federated States of Micronesia.

In the U16 division, the CNMI will have Michael Ren, Vincent Tudela, Ken Song, and Robbie Schorr, and they will go up against the West squad, which will lean on players from host Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. In the girls U16 division, the North Pacific will pin its hopes on three-time champion Carol Lee, doubles winner Malika Miyawaki (with Lee), and Grace Choi.

The team event will have a round-robin play in each group and the squad with the best record will be named champions.

The CNMI’s U14 players will start competing in the team event tomorrow. The Commonwealth’s U14 squad is led by Ji Min Woo. Joining him on the North Pacific team are Richard Steele, Seung Jin Paik, and Sean Lee. The girls group has sisters Conatsu and Coume Kaga and Maria Gregoire and the North Pacific team will go up against the West. Also scheduled for tomorrow is the North Pacific U16’s squad game versus the East, while the North Pacific U12 and U14 crews will play the West and East, respectively, on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in the team event in the U12 age group of the POJC, the CNMI (Kang and Steele) finished fourth, while Elliot joined the North Pacific Team and also ended up at the No. 4 spot. Cook Islands won the boys U12, while East Pacific ruled the girls field.
