Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia is gearing up for its runoff election for the seats of governor and lieutenant governor, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Marcello Peterson, acting governor and ex-Marine veteran of the first Gulf War, is being challenged for the gubernatorial seat by FSM Ambassador to China, Akilino Susaya. Both men hail from the same neighborhood in Kolonia and were educated by the Jesuits.

In the race for the lieutenant governor’s seat, former Pohnpei State Legislative Speaker Nelson Pelep is running against a political newcomer and successful businessman, Reed Oliver.

The stakes are high as all the camps campaigned feverishly to win votes.

In the CNMI, all eligible Pohnpei voters are being asked to cast their ballots this coming Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Carolinian Utt in Garapan, Saipan. Voting starts at 7am and will close at 7pm.
