The Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence would be hosting its annual Saipan Teen Poetry Slam in two weeks.

The competition is slated for Feb. 28 at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, from 6pm to 9pm, and those who are aged 13 to 19 are eligible to join as a contestant, but should submit their own original poems and contact information for review before 5pm, Feb. 26, 2019.

Poem submissions must include the contestant’s full name, age, name of school, and contact number, and may be sent within the body of the email, as a word document, or as a PDF file to info@endviolencenmi.org.

The quality of writing, entertainment value of the poem, connection to audience, and relevance to the Teen Dating Violence Awareness Prevention Month composes the judgment criteria while contestants would be separated into either the 13-15-year-old division or the 16-19-year-old division.

The same competition would be held on Rota on Feb. 22, 2019, and a teen talent show on Tinian on Feb. 26, 2019.

“This is a way for children to express themselves via an art [form] that they are comfortable with,” said NMCADSV executive director Maisie Tenorio Monday. “This is another avenue for them to make their voices heard about an issue that they are usually silent about.”

Earlier that Monday, Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios signed the proclamation for Teen Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month at Kagman High School.
