Pikaboo, 8 others compete in Marianas Open
Trench Tech?s Shane ?Pikaboo? Alvarez uses his arms to evade a kick from Jay Tenorio during their flyweight bout in PXC 42 late last month at the University of Guam Fieldhouse.
Trench Tech’s Shane “Pikaboo” Alvarez leads the CNMI bets competing in the 2014 Marianas Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament that will be held tomorrow at the Father Duenas Memorial School’s Phoenix Center in Guam.
Shane, according to his father Cuki, is entered in the white belt, 150-160 class, and will be going for his second win in Guam in less than a month. The young Alvarez saw action in PXC 42 two weeks ago and earned a win via split decision against Jay Tenorio in the flyweight bout.
“This was one of my closest fights ever. It could have gone either way but I think I edged him with the takedowns in each round. Also I was the aggressor. Jay brought it though and we fought our hearts out. Jay is a warrior and an extremely talented and well trained fighter,” said Shane, who stayed in Guam after his second win in PXC to prepare for the Marianas Open, the biggest BJJ tournament in the region for both adults and teen participants.
Shane said his preparation for the BJJ tournament is going well and he is feeling lighter and quicker, and his stamina has also improved.
Joining Shane in the same event are fellow Trench Tech fighter Roman “Boom Alvarez” and Frank “The Crank” Camacho, who also won their respective PXC bouts, and six representatives from Gracie Barra Marianas.
Roman will be seeing action in the BJJ after coming off morale-boosting unanimous decision win against Mklane “Palauan Style” Alfred. Roman used his ground game to dominate his foe and this strategy will be in handy, as he competes in this weekend’s white belt.
Meanwhile, Rusty Ada will be debuting in the Marianas Open along with Jesus Mafnas, Jesus and Lorenzo Attao, Richard Aldan, and Kimo Lizama. Peter Mendiola, who co-trains the Gracie Barra Marianas fighter with brother Francis, will join the team in Guam.
Francis said the six BJJ practitioners prepared for the Marianas Open for three months, holding their last training session in Garapan last Wednesday night. Ada is competing in the purple belt, while Mafnas and the Attaos are entered in the while belt division. Aldan is participating in the orange belt, while Lizama is joining the green belt contest.
