Homeowners and establishments on Saipan will finally have physical addresses within the year, with implementation of the long-awaited house numbering project that is expected to start as early as February 2020, with the southern side of the island being their first site, according to Saipan Mayor’s Office project manager Lee Tenorio.

“We’re really excited. We want to make sure that we get this going,” said Tenorio “We just have a few little things to finalize and then we should be going out and reaching out to the community.”

The matter of when Saipan will have a physical address has been an ongoing issue since 20 years ago, but now, with a master map of the island that was updated in September 2019 by a contractor of the mayor’s office, the project can now begin.

“Having a physical address will be very beneficial not only for our people but for our first-responders as well, especially with an emergency that requires them to be there as soon as possible,” said Tenorio. “We will now be able to say where our exact location is without having to say ‘go left here and then turn right there,’” he added.

Information on what the guidelines are for how houses should affix their assigned numbers will be available soon.

Tenorio, who was appointed project manager last April 2019, said it’s been joyful to explore different options for the project. He hopes to provide more services that will benefit the community in the long run.

According to Saipan Tribune archives, the project will entail sending out people to every home and assigning numbers to each home. They will be giving homeowners a letter that gives them their street address and number and some samples that shows them how to put up the numbers on their houses or home units.

The house number that the homeowner will then affix to their house will be a minimum of 4 inches in height and up to 6 inches, with a thickness that is more than 3/8-inch.

Owners would have to comply with these specifications set for the posting of the new addresses so that people passing by from the road could see the number, even if the house or the building is a few feet away from the road.
