PH senator to visit CNMI for PH Independence Day event
Philippine Senator Sonny Angara is expected to arrive on Saipan tomorrow to keynote the 118th Commemoration of the Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on June 12 at the Kanoa Resort.
“The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands is home to about 18,000 Filipinos. I am eagerly looking forward to touching base with the Filipino community and various organizations there,” he said in a statement.
Angara, vice chairman of the Philippine Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will meet with Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and the members of the Legislature to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues.
The visiting senator, who earned his master’s degree from Harvard Law School, is a strong advocate for tax reform and education in the Philippine legislature.
He is also known for his interest in the issues of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), having championed the passage of the new Overseas Workers Welfare Administration charter, and more recently the CMTA law, which effectively increased the tax-exempt value of items sent by overseas Filipinos to their families back home.
Considered as one of the upcoming leaders in Philippine politics, Angara will be on the island for four days.
