The Pelicans showed poise this time to thwart IT&E, 71-66, in the second game in the 2014 MDX Amateur Radio Club Basketball League last Saturday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.

The Pelicans, who bungled a 14-point halftime lead against TBK Mechanics last week to drop their opener, withstood IT&E’s fourth-quarter rally to enter the win column in the 10-team field.

Free throws saved the day for the Pelicans, as they drilled their last 8 points from the 15-foot line to foil IT&E’s repeated comeback bids. Luizi Reyes made four charities, Don Brennan added two, while Galarse and Ogumoro had one apiece. All four finished in twin digits with Brennan tallying 19, Ogumoro chipping in 16, and Galarse and Reyes contributing 15 and 12, respectively.

Ogumoro and Galarse started the Pelicans offense, but IT&E remained afloat at the end of the third after hitting three triples. The Pelicans led by only a deuce at the conclusion of the opening canto, 15-13, but padded the advantage to double digits at the break, 35-23, after drawing 10 points from Brennan.

Brennan added 6 more in the third period and got help from the rest of the crew, as the Pelicans had another 20-point production to keep the twin digit lead, 55-41. However, IT&E slowly trimmed the lead in the fourth period with Errol Peredo and Marlon De Dios alternately hitting baskets.

The Pelicans countered with only four field goals in the payoff canto, but still save the win, as IT&E was forced to give up fouls in the closing minutes and the former capitalized on the free shots.

De Dios led IT&E (1-1) with his 26 points, while Peredo was the only other player on the squad to hit double figures with his 18 markers.

Pelicans 71 – Brennan 19, Ogumoro 16, Galarse 15, Reyes 12, Bahillo 5, Camacho 2.
IT&E 66 – De Dios 26, Peredo 18, Barrios 8, Gamboa 6, Cayanan 2, Dayrit 2.
Scoring by quarters: 15-13, 35-23, 55-41, 71-66.
