Non-profit organization PDM Promoters, Inc. held its first monthly cleanup in Garapan for 2012 last Saturday.
Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters said a total of 18 volunteers, including five members of the Saipan Awaodori Team, took part in the monthly event that collected 600 lbs of trash in the area.
“We want to continue our advocacy to protect our environment and maintain the cleanliness of our island so we started the year right with our regular cleanup,” she told Saipan Tribune.
The group, which holds its monthly cleanup every first Saturday of the month, picked up trash along Coral Tree Avenue to the Garapan Fire Station along Beach Road up to the Joeten Hafa Adai Center area.
Siwa said that volunteers also provided bush cutting services, removed dried leaves from blocked drainages, and got rid of dried leaves on road islands.
She explained that they decided to extend their volunteer work to the road islands since the Division of Parks and Recreation, tasked to maintain the area, is closed on Fridays due to government austerity.
“We try to help as much as we can,” added Siwa.
PDM Promoters, Inc. thanks the Division of Environmental Quality for providing them with trash supplies and Dickerson & Quinn for taking care of the refreshments of the volunteers.
