Patient at psychiatric ward beats up nurse

A male patient at the Commonwealth Health Center’s psychiatric ward beat up a female nurse on March 1 when she tried to give him water and medicine.

Nathan Dean Villanueva, 42, was arrested for assault and battery and disturbing the peace.

A responding police officer said the nurse had red bruise marks on the right side of her face, her index finger on the left was swollen, and her ring finger on the right hand had a small cut. She complained of pain in the head and face.

At a hearing yesterday, Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio released Villanueva to CHC without requiring him to post a bail.

Kim-Tenorio ordered a mental evaluation for the defendant.

A status conference will be held on April 14.

Police detective Nicholas A. Rabauliman stated in his report that two police officers responded to CHC’s psychiatric ward where an assault and battery incident was reported on March 1 at 11:41am.

Rabauliman said they met with the nurse, who stated that Villanueva punched and kicked her several times after she tried to give him water and medicine.

It was another female nurse who grabbed Villanueva from behind as he continued kicking the victim, who was down on the floor.

Police arrested Villanueva that day. He was later released back to CHC, where he was re-arrested on Monday.
