Department of Public Safety spokesman Travis Hurst said the car’s driver, Brendan Abner Fernando Venus, 50, was not injured.

The report did not mention whether Venus was given a traffic citation.

Hurst said DPS Central received a call at 6:09pm about a vehicular crash along Beach Road in front of the Ada Gymnasium.

Police officers responded and saw a damaged three-wheeled moped with its engine still running and smoke emanating from it. The officers also saw a red Toyota Corolla sedan at the northernmost exit of the parking lot.

Officers closed both north- and southbound lanes of Beach Road for a period of time to ensure the safety of motorists in the event of a fire from the moped.

Hurst said investigation showed that the moped was travelling north on the outer lane of Beach Road when the car from the southbound lane made a left turn into the gym’s parking lot.

Hurst said the car failed to yield the right of way to the moped, causing the moped to collide with the rear left side of the car.
