After admitting to killing his landlord in a fit of rage following an altercation over rent, Alfonso Sebastian Parongan was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
During a change of plea hearing yesterday, Parongan, 57, admitted to murdering his landlord, Josefina Pineda, while under the influence of drugs and alcohol in 2017. He also admitted to stabbing Pineda’s husband, Antonio Barit.
Parongan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and assault and battery.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho sentenced Parongan to the full maximum sentence of 30 years imprisonment for second-degree murder and full maximum sentence of 10 years for assault and battery. The sentences would run concurrent with one another.
Parongan is not eligible for any release program and is not eligible for parole until he has served 20 years of his sentence.
Parongan was given credit of over one year for time served.
All hearings and the jury trial for Parongan set for October has been vacated.
A copy of the judgement and commitment order would be faxed to the Homeland Security-Immigration and Custom Enforcement and would make Parongan deportable since he is not a U.S citizen.
During the sentencing, Parongan was given the opportunity to address the court and the family members of Pineda who were present.
He asked for forgiveness and blamed the incident on his excessive use of methamphetamine and because he had been drinking.
Parongan described the events of October 2017 and said that he remembers Pineda asking him to pay his rent and him telling Pineda that he would pay the next day.
“Because I was doing ‘ice’ I committed the biggest mistake of my life and I’m asking for forgiveness,” he kept saying that over and over in Tagalog.
After a heated argument over his late rental payment, Parongan said he went to his kitchen, grabbed a knife, and stabbed his landlord with it.
He also admitted to stabbing Barit multiple times that night.
