‘Parenting comes with no instructions’
Helping other parents get the available resources needed for improving and strengthening their families is one of the goals of the proclamation declaring February as National Parent Leadership Month, which Gov. Ralph DLG Torres signed late last month.
Division of Youth and Services administrator Vivian Sablan said this is what the National Parent Leadership Month wants to achieve, for parents to have an active role with their families and in the community they live in.
“We need parents to become leaders who could play an active role in their communities. To inspire other to do the same,” said Sablan, who added that parents are the first people their children look up to.
“Strong communities are the result of happy families. How you take care of your kids will impact their future lives. Our kids are future leaders of our community, so we must be part of their growth process,” she added.
Sablan said DYS would facilitate and utilize the process of helping educate parents, especially single parents, of their roles in the community.
“How would they make an impact? How to get rid of the daily struggles of being a parent? These are some of the questions that we want to give answers to them. Parenting has no instructions,” said Sablan.
“Being a mother of two daughters, I too am still learning. I still have challenges and struggles. That’s what we want to establish to the parents. To have the resources within reach,” she added.
On Feb. 16 and 17, a Parent Education Program Display/Outreach will be held at the CHCC-Women, Infant and Children Program.
A Parent Development Workshop, where Parent Leaders will be honored, will be held on Feb. 20 from 7:30am to 4:30pm with the venue to be announced.
The National Parent Leadership Month began in 2004 and it aims to recognize parents that went beyond their families in helping improve the community.
An Early Childhood STEP Class and a Parent Education Program Presentation would be held in different schools are the other activities of the National Parent Leadership Month.
