Siblings Jordan and Janelle Pangilinan led the opening day winners in the IT&E Doubles and Mixed Doubles Badminton Competition 2016 that kicked off last Friday at the TSL Sports Complex.

The Pangilinans swept Daniel Macario and Hannah Choi, 21-8, 21-16, in their mixed doubles A match in Northern Marianas Badminton Association’s first tournament for the season.

The mixed doubles A game was one of the three opening matches in the IT&E-sponsored contest with the two others featuring mixed doubles B and C tiffs. Jeff Riman and Loida Ito played in the mixed doubles B and needed three games to slip past Rodwealth Espana and Shirley Kim, 21-15, 18-21, 22-20. Morgan and Erica Jung took the short route to victory in the mixed doubles C after outclassing Hajin Oh and Miles Rodriguez, 21-14, 21-7.

In the second set of games in Day 1 of the NMBA-sanctioned competition, Lanie Bartolome and Windy Fernandez recorded the first win in the group after prevailing against the mother and daughter tandem of Malou and Nicole Malasarte, 18-21, 21-13, 21-13. In the women’s doubles B, Rowena Sison and Cheng Saturno made short work of Vilma Reyes and Jaja Bocago, 21-12, 21-12, while Patrick Fernandez and A.J. Ortega got a free win in the men’s doubles C after a no-show from Denmark Lizardo and Carl Lomibao.

Meanwhile, three men’s doubles games capped the first day of NMBA’s season-opening tournament.

In the men’s doubles AB, Glenn Buultjens partnered with Nathan Guerrero in sweeping brothers Daniel and Ezekiel Macario, 21-18, 21-16. In the men’s doubles B division, Jun Lee teamed up with Joel Ortega and they also needed only two games to down Patrick Jake Fieldad and Oh Im Boh, 21-13, 21-11. In the men’s doubles C, Morgan got his second victory in one day after joining forces with Jun Sik Kim in outlasting Henry and Hajin Ho. Morgan and Kim dropped the first game, 20-22, but still took the win after topping the last two, 21-17, 21-13.

Matches in the IT&E-backed tournament continued last Saturday and Sunday and results will be reported in Saipan Tribune’s Friday issue.
