Connie’s BBQ and Pacific Hardware showed poise in the homestretch to escape their respective opponents in the One Pacific Promotional Basketball League 2020 last week at the Civic Center Court.

Connie BBQ outclassed 6JMS/Seabridge in the curtain-raiser last March 12, 76-73, while Pacific Hardware downed IT&E in the second match last Friday, 78-72.

Ahead by twin digits after the third period, 60-50, Pacific Hardware withstood IT&E’s late rally in the fourth to take the 6-point win.

Mac Mintac scored 7 of his 20 points in the fourth canto to help Pacific Hardware foil IT&E’s comeback bid, while Ken Viray and Marlon De Dios hit timely baskets for the winning squad in the final canto.

Viray led all scorers with his 28 points, while De Dios also finished in twin digits with 15.

Jaymark De Guzman paced IT&E with his 21 points, while Shane Deleon Guerrero added 20.

IT&E played catch up right at the get-go as only De Guzman consistently hit his shots early on. Deleon Guerrero, who was held to one field goal in the entire first half that ended with Pacific Hardware still ahead, 43-34, stepped up in the second, however Viray, Mintac, and De Dios teamed up and denied IT&E’s bid to enter the win column.

Meanwhile, Connie’s BBQ made crucial free throws in the fourth period to eke out the 3-point win over 6JMS/Seabridge.

Connie’s BBQ’s last 7 points in the close match all came from the foul line with Dan Mateo delivering four free throws, Andrew Ashburn making two, and Ron Rodriguez adding one.

Besides his pair of charities, Ashburn also knocked in two field goals in the fourth quarter, while Mateo scored 7 points to help Connie’s BBQ top 6JMS/Seabridge, which clung to a 60-59 lead after the third and eventually lost it in the final frame.

Ashburn top-scored for Connie’s BBQ with his 24 points, while Freddie Pelisamen had the same output in a losing effort for 6JMS/Seabridge.
