Participants were rewarded with medals for attending the two-part clinic that involved teaching the youth the basic skills in various sports in Phase 1 and putting into practice what they have learned in the first stage for the Phase 2 sessions.

The first part of the summer camp, which was held in coordination with Saipan Soccer School, run for nearly a month and drew more than 100 participants. Phase 1 was held from June 29 to July 29, while Phase 2 was originally scheduled from Aug. 3 to 7, but was suspended after Typhoon Soudelor struck Saipan.

The final part of the summer camp resumed last Sept. 21 and was completed last Friday with participants doing seven sports/activities: badminton, volleyball, basketball, futsal kick ball, dodgeball, and soccer. Badminton and volleyball games took place at the TSL Sports Complex with two-hour sessions each, while basketball and futsal matches were played for four hours each at the same venue.

From the TSL Sports Complex, participants moved to the San Antonio pitch to play kick ball, dodgeball, and soccer. The first two activities were held last Sept. 24 for two hours each, while soccer games were played for three hours last Friday and were followed by the awards ceremony.

“Aside from participation medals, the kids also received additional medals for winning in the various sports,” said summer camp coordinator Cristy Villaflor.

“The kids enjoyed the games we played. They enjoy the moment with other kids and momentarily forgot about the destruction Typhoon Soudelor brought to the island,” she added.

Saipan Soccer School staff, representatives from some local sports federations, and players from the CNMI Women’s National Team training pool were the volunteer coaches in the summer camp.
