Over 30 join triathlon race

The 2019 IT&E Taga Kids & Sprints Triathlon pushed through despite the inclement weather with over 30 participating in yesterday’s races.

In the sprints, Heather Taylor and Nap Dizon led the individual finishers with the former completing the 750-meter swim in the waters off Paupau Beach, the 20-kilometer bike, and 5K run around the Marpi area in 1:23:00 and the latter in 1:31:00. Taylor finished ahead of Shawna Brennflect (1:39:52), Tania Tan (1:41:00), and Sly Taggart (1:48:00) in the women’s field, while in the men’s division, Dizon defeated Will Ordosgoiti (1:35:00), Robby Glass (1:37:00), Jay Diyco (1:41:00), Floro Dereces (1:49:00), and Chang Wang Jang (2:02:15).

In the team event, Black Mamba made it to the finish line first after clocking in at 1:27:00, while Team LITS1 and Team LITS2 rounded out the Top 3 after checking in at 1:28:00 and 1:31:26, respectively. Shiela Team, Rainy Team, and Sara’s Poole Party also joined the race.

Meanwhile, Scarlett Burrell and Kanoa Owens ruled the 5 to 8 age group individual race, while Aoi Braxton and Wataru Kadokura topped the 9 to 12 division. Participants in the 5 to 8 age group did the 25-m swim, one loop bike, and one loop run course around Paupau Beach. The 9 to 12 entries had a longer race, swimming 50m, biking two loops, and running two loops.

Leilani Ruszala, who ran without her shoes on the way to the finish line, came in at second in the 5 to 8 age group and was followed by Lovel Spaeth, Amethys Winkfield, and Isla Turner. In the boys division, Quido Jambor, Yutaka Kadokura, Keoni Ruszala, Evan Poole, P.J. Seman, Jackson and Cooper Koning-Fong, and Teegan Wright were the other finishers.

Aoi won her one-on-one showdown with her sister Kaya in the girls 9 to 12 age group, while Wataru edged Alonzo Nicolas Acosta in the boys race. Completing the finishers list in the Taga Kids were team event’s Fiesta Rockers 1 and Isla Montessori 2.

The weekend event was sponsored by IT&E, Kanoa Resort, Aloha Made, and Gatorade and was organized by the Triathlon Association of the CNMI.
