Over 150 participated in a walkathon a charter of the Lion’s Club International organized last Saturday for diabetes.

The Saipan Marianas Lions Club, with its 33 members, held their first walkathon fundraiser to raise funds for diabetes patients, attracting 155 participants and raising a gross of $4,500 in funds.

The course started from the Garapan Fishing Base with a turnaround point at the Quartermaster Road.

Ladyvir Canape is the secretary of the SMLC and chairwoman of the first annual walkathon of the organization. The SMLC is led by its president Flor Miranda.

“We would like to say thank you to all our volunteers, supporters, members of community that came to join us even though little bit rain before the start. The Walkathon was considered a success knowing that this is the first for the Saipan Marianas Lions Club,” Canape told Saipan Tribune.

She noted in an email that there were 38 total sponsors and that half of all the proceeds raised from the walkathon goes to the TanHoldings Football Club.

“One way to eradicate diabetes is to be active and supporting the football club helps achieve that goal through sports,” Canape clarified with Saipan Tribune.

She disclosed that the remaining half of the proceeds would go to the club for its “different community projects,” including a hunger relief program, a youth development program, an environmental protection program, and “annual gift giving to the Children’s Development Assistance Center Early Intervention Program” and many others.
