Oral Cancer roadside waving to take place today

The Commonwealth Cancer Association, anti-cancer groups, dental clinics, and supporters will be holding a roadside waving today from 4pm to at 6pm along Beach Road in front of The Shack in Oleai.

This is in line with the observance of Oral Cancer Awareness Month. The roadside waving is part of CCA and their partners’ efforts to help spread awareness of the effects of chewing tobacco and betel nut as it is the major cause of oral cancer.

CCA program manager Juan Babauta said the community is encouraged to wear red since it is symbolic of oral cancer. Community members can register on-site and will receive a red ribbon to be worn with pride.

“Invite your friends, family, and children as we kick off the countdown to Marianas March Against Cancer 2015 and promote healthy habits with healthy living in the CNMI. Our dental clinics are here to support us and we thank Dental Care, The Saipan Seventh Day Adventist Clinic, New Wave Dental, Toothworks, Smile Marianas, and Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. Division of Public Health for their assistance,” Babauta said.

“I hope to have a few dentists and survivors come to this roadside wave, so if there’s anyone else you can think of, tell them to join us. Also, I have Oral Cancer shirts from last year that will be sold on-site for $10. All proceeds will go to CCA and MMAC,” he added.

Marianas March Against Cancer committee member Nola Hix is also asking the community to come out and help support the cause. She said fighting oral cancer and raising awareness for early screening will help fight this disease.
