‘Open your hearts to dogs’
A concerned volunteer for the animal shelter is hopeful a “parade of dogs” at this Saturday’s Christmas Parade will open the hearts of community members to the plight of homeless dogs here.
The volunteer, who prefers to be referred to as “Damiana,” said she has planned for the walk with Mayor’s Office Dog Control Program director Spencer Marchadesch.
Dogs will be dressed with decorated vests as part of the parade, she said.
She invites community members to contact the program if they are interested in joining or helping out with the event.
She said she wants to make the people of Saipan aware of the stray dog problem on island. Her goal is make people know of the many “wonderful dogs, ready and affordable” for adoption from the animal shelter.
Damiana said she has had 40 years of professional work with dogs, having trained trained “thousands,” and added that she is open to following up on adoptions with dog-obedience classes to help dogs from being “chained up in the back yard.”
A dog should be a “member of the family,” according to her.
Right now, Foremost has sponsored a banner for the parade, according to Damiana. She hopes more people will get involved with the animal shelter.
They will join the Christmas parade beginning at the Kristo Rai Church to the American Memorial Park at 4:30pm, she said. The parade is reported to kick off at 5:30pm.
