OPA to comment on leaked report next week

Public Auditor Michael Pai said yesterday that the Office of the Public Auditor “will prepare appropriate comments” next week related to last week’s leak of an OPA report concerning attorney general Edward Buckingham.
The OPA report concluded that Buckingham’s actions “violated criminal prohibitions” of both the Commonwealth Ethics Code Act and the Commonwealth Election Act when he hosted a campaign party for then delegate candidate Joseph N. Camacho at the governor’s house in Gualo Rai on Aug. 28, 2010.
Pai said he has been on compassionate leave since last week when his father passed away. The funeral is this week. Pai is expected to be back next week.
Buckingham and Gov. Benigno R. Fitial expressed concerns on Monday that Pai, who they said has a duty to maintain confidentiality, has been silent about the unauthorized release of a confidential OPA report.
Fitial has not authorized the release of the OPA report since its completion in December 2010.
Buckingham said the release of the report without the governor’s permission is unlawful. He also said it’s not appropriate to comment on a report that was unlawfully released.
