Ol’Aces, Rollers 1 outclass foes
The Ol’Aces and Rollers 1 prevailed in their respective boys U18 matches in the 2014 Tan Holdings Basketball Classic last Friday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
The Ol’Aces were pitted against Sun Palace Hotel and eked out a 48-45 victory for the former’s first win in two games. The Ol’Aces dropped their opener against the Sonics late last month.
Nakashima Nakashima top-scored for the Ol’Aces with his 10 points, while four of his teammates contributed at least 6 points apiece. Adrian De Luna and Tristan Montes added 8 markers apiece and E.J. Ermitanio and Dave Bucayo had 6 apiece. Bucayo registered all his points in the second half and 4 of the Ol’Aces’ last 6 points to foil Sun Palace’s repeated comeback bids.
Sun Palace was forced to rally on several occasions as it trailed right at the get-go with the Ol’Aces enjoying an 8-point lead at the break, 25-17. Nakashima led the Ol’Aces in the first 20 minutes of play, firing 8 points, while Montes added 6.
Aaron Pamintuan was the lone Sun Palace player to hit more than one field goal in the first half, allowing the Ol’Aces to take control of the match. His teammates began stepping up in the second half, but the Ol’Aces converted timely baskets to withstand Sun Palace’s runs.
In the second boys division match, Kobee Mendoza powered Rollers 1 to a 70-62 win over the Sonics.
Mendoza sizzled for 21 points to hand Rollers 1 a 2-0 record. Mike Arciaga and Angelo Factor backed him up, adding 12 markers apiece.
Jaymark De Guzman led the Sonics’ losing cause with his 20 markers. The Sonics fell to a 1-1 slate.
Mendoza dropped 13 of his total output in the first half, including Rollers’ 1 last 6 markers in that period to give his team a 40-31 lead. Rollers 1 kept it safe distance against the Sonics in the second half with Mendoza drawing help from Factor and Arciaga.
Meanwhile, in the final women’s division game last Saturday, Armatech eased past Sun Palace Hotel, 49-30.
Armatech remained undefeated in four games to retain the top spot in the six-team field, while Sun Palace is still winless after five matches.
Lalaine Pagarao and Chevy Kate Alipio starred in Armatech’s 19-point win, registering 15 points each, while no Sun Palace player broke into twin digits as Shaina Abadilla managed to earn only 8 markers.
