Oh My J bags third straight win
Oh My J kept its winning run in the 2015 Blue Haus/IT&E Inter-Color Basketball League after outclassing Purple Rain, 58-55, last Sunday at the Navy Hill court.
Oh My J survived Purple Rain’s fight-back in the second half of the resumption of their Sept. 5 suspended match to notch its third win in a row after four games. Purple Rain had its short two-game streak snapped and it fell to an even 2-2 record.
With its third victory, Oh My J forced a four-way tie for the lead at the halfway mark of the single-round robin elimination. Oh My J matched the league-leading record of Makalaro Lang, Hard Kulangot, and Wag Kang Pabebe. Makalaro Lang was scheduled to play Eh Di Wow last Sunday for the solo lead and results of the match will be reported in Saipan Tribune’s Thursday edition.
Oh My J joined the four-way logjam for the No. 1 spot in the nine-team field after drawing another steady game from the pair of Junar Guiab and Nate Mateo.
Guiab, who was held to one field goal in the first half that ended with Oh My J way ahead, 34-17, scored 15 points in the last frame, including the team’s first 7 markers at the resumption of the game. Guiab’s baskets thwarted Purple Rain’s repeated comeback bids in the second half, while Mateo’s solid contribution in the first allowed the squad to build enough cushion. Mateo had a baker’s dozen in the opening 20 minutes of play and added 3 in the second half. James Sablan contributed 3, while Ferdie Tobias and Joseph Galulu combined for the 3 more markers of Oh My J, which sealed the win from the foul line, scoring the last 6 markers from the free throw area.
Purple Rain managed to slice Oh My J’s big lead to single digit in the second half behind the efforts of Bruce Berline, Paul Bautista, and R.J. Reyes. Reyes dropped 10 points in the second frame to finish with a game-high 18, while Berline made all his 11 markers in the final 20 minutes of the match. Bautista contributed 7 in Purple Rain’s losing comeback bid.
Meanwhile, action in the inaugural league resumes tonight with Kidlat taking on Red Rice. The opposing teams hold similar 1-3 records and are at the bottom half of the team standings.
