Oleai Elementary School received a huge boost from Rep. Donald C. Barcinas (R-Saipan) after the freshman lawmaker donated money to assist them in the renovation of its basketball court.
Barcinas turned over a check worth $3,800 to OES principal Jasylene Parico and officials of the student council yesterday at the school grounds.
Northern Marianas Sports Association staffers Eli Rangamar and Greg Iginoef, and a representative from contractor GR Corp. were also present during the check presentation.
Barcinas said the money would help the school in resurfacing and improving the basketball court, especially now that the paint had already faded.
“It’s always nice to have projects for the kids. After the renovation is done, the students will have a proper place to play and have some recreational activity,” said Barcinas.
“They could also have some bleachers in the court so they could host some games where fans can enjoy watching basketball matches,” he added.
Parico said the whole OES community is thankful for Barcinas’ donation. “This will go a long way to help improve our basketball court. Thank you to Congressman Barcinas for the donation.”
A non-skid type of paint will be used for the resurfacing of the court’s floor, making it smoother and less prone to injury for the students who are going to use the facility. The renovation project may be completed in about a week more, depending on the weather.
Meanwhile, Rangamar said that they would provide additional equipment and other forms of assistance to the school.
“We’re going to give basketballs and some nets to the school with the help of some businesses and Congressman Barcinas.”
He added that they are also ready to hold basketball clinics to hone and improve the skills of Oleai students and donate a special type of goal so that more children could play and shoot some hoops.
