With recycling bins, a portable stove, and an electric fan in the background and CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) scattered on the table, Gov. Eloy S. Inos and Lt. Gov. Jude U. Hofschneider declared October 2014 as CNMI Energy Action Month early Tuesday morning at the Office of the Governor’s conference room.

In signing the proclamation, Inos and Hofschneider called upon CNMI residents to focus on making clean energy choices by investing in clean energy, including research and technology development.

The 2014 CNMI Energy Action Month’s theme is “Transition to a clean energy reality.” It means greater energy security, less carbon pollution, and more energy dollars saved.

The islands’ top executives also declared Oct. 30, 2014, as Weatherization Day.

The proclamation states that under the CNMI Weatherization Assistance Program, the CNMI Energy Office was able to assist 711 qualified low-income families by providing energy conservation education information; replacing their inefficient refrigerator, window air-conditioning units, and light bulbs; installation of smoke detectors; and insulation of room fenestrations, window gaps, and cracks.

Inos said he is pleasantly surprised with the over 700 families serviced by the program.

Department of Public Works Secretary Martin Sablan said the 711 refrigerators given away by the Energy Office is a big help in reducing families’ energy consumption.

“We just hope the public will use these appliances and tools that we’re providing them to reduce energy consumption. Utilizing more of the daylight rather than turning on our energy light will also reduce a lot more than we expected. It’s not just using the energy efficient light bulbs but turning it off when not needed, which means turning it off during the daylight hours,” said Sablan.

Energy Office director Thelma Inos said her office will soon announce dates when they will be visiting Tinian and Rota to distribute fans, portable stoves, and CFLs.
