Occupancy rate at 88 pct in December 2015
»2015 sets new record for occupancy rates
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 88.31 percent occupancy among 11 member hotels for December 2015, a 3-percent increase compared to December 2014. At the same time, occupancy rates for calendar year 2015 ended at 87.20 percent, beating the record of 85.57 percent in 1997 before the Asian economic crisis.
“It’s a great feeling to report that occupancy rates among our membership has set a new record in 2015,” said HANMI chair Gloria Cavanagh. “As partners of the CNMI government and the local community, it’s been difficult journey, but we can see that working together pays off.”
Room rates were $142.89 during the month, compared to $139.73 last December.
“We’d like to continue the upward trend in the CNMI economic recovery, but this will require strategic planning,” said Cavanagh. “Stop diverting funds from the hotel occupancy tax away from marketing and destination enhancement by the Marianas Visitors Authority, and allow long-time public lease hotel owners to stay in business by negotiating new leases. The formula obviously works, so let’s not lose focus.”
The average room rate in 2015 was $132.53, compared to $125.95 in 2014.
