NWS: Longer drought conditions in the CNMI
Recent heavy rainfall across Guam has eased drought conditions but a dry trade-wind pattern will continue the next couple weeks across Guam and the CNMI.
A weak disturbance passing south of Guam over the weekend brought spotty showers to Guam and Rota but adequate weekly rainfall is not expected across the region the next two weeks. It may still be another three to four weeks before adequate rainfall returns to Guam and slightly longer for the CNMI, according to the latest statement from the National Weather Service in Guam.
In a drought statement last week, NWS said a wet trade-wind pattern continues to provide steady showers to islands from Chuuk eastward to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. “A favorable upper-level pattern has encouraged spotty showers to spread farther north across islands of northern Chuuk state and the Marshalls. Farther west, weak tropical disturbances and circulations have manifested across eastern Yap state and drifted westward. This led to a very wet pattern for the Republic of Palau, with more variability across islands of Yap state. The northern extent of these disturbances provided showers to Guam but the CNMI remained dry,” the statement added. “The tropical upper- tropospheric trough is beginning to establish across the region. This feature combined with a slight northward shift in the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone and disturbances are indications that a wetter pattern is trying to establish across most of Micronesia. ENSO neutral conditions are expected to continue through the fall with most models indicating a transition to La Niña by winter.”
In the Marianas, officials report water levels are still above thresholds for concern.
