College can be financially crippling, as the expenses for tuition and others can take a bigger toll on those who plan to go stateside and pursue their dreams. Fortunately, programs like the CNMI Scholarship Office have been assisting those who want a college education.

“We are very fortunate here in the CNMI to have a government that allocates funds to make that dream a reality,” said Monique Boyer Sablan, the special assistant for Youth Affairs. Without the CNMI Scholarship Office and its providers, students in the CNMI would face more financial burdens while attending college, she added.

In recognition of the CNMI Scholarship Office and its partners, Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios declared November as CNMI Scholarship Month yesterday, to coincide with the declaration of National Scholarship Month.

“This designation is an opportunity to celebrate the student access programs and people who make them possible because of the positive impacts these scholarships can have on the lives of others in our communities on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota,” said CSO administrator Rose Pangelinan Camacho. She credited the role of CSO’s providers such as Bank of Guam, Saipan Chamber of Commerce, Joeten Enterprises, First Hawaiian Bank, Matson Navigation Co., Northern Marianas Insurance Association, Office of the Mayor of Rota, Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance, Office of the Mayor of Tinian and Aguigan Islands, and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation for helping provide college access resources for students.

CNMI Scholarship Month was first proclaimed in 2017 but it wasn’t celebrated in 2018 due to Super Typhoon Yutu’s destruction on Saipan and Tinian.

CSO has event scheduled throughout the month such as outreaches to promote awareness of college access resources CSO and other local scholarship providers offer.
