Northern Yankees join SBL season

The Northern Yankees became the last minute addition to the competing teams in the 2015 Saipan Baseball League, which is set to open next week at the Francisco M. “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field.

The Yankees’ inclusion brings to seven the squads that will vie for the SBL title, which will be defended by Brewers

The Yankees, with Saipan Stevedore as their sponsor, won the pennant but lost the 2014 finals to the Brewers, who will now be managed by Joey Dela Cruz. Dela Cruz took over the spot of longtime manager Tony Rogolifoi, who decided to step down to concentrate on running the SBL and his work as Northern Marianas Sports Association’s executive director.

The Fielders of Pat Tenorio, North Starz of Jon Tenorio, Franco Flores’ A’s, Froilan Camacho’s Jets, and the Doru Camacho-handled Falcons are the other competing teams. Raena Camacho is the Yankees manager.

Rogolifoi has also revised the entire schedule for the season after the Yankees’ inclusion, but the opening match on Jan. 12, Monday, will still be between the Brewers and the Fielders.

The North Starz play against the A’s on Jan. 14, Wednesday, and the Jets take on the Falcons on Jan. 16, Friday, while the Yankees make their debut against the North Starz on Jan. 19.

Rogolifoi is reminding all teams to submit their 25-member rosters for verification and statistical purposes this week along with the $1,000 entrance fee.

Rogolifoi is also requesting all managers and coaches to attend the Jan. 7 final meeting at 5:30pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym conference room as the league will review and adopt the ground rules and discuss other technical matters for the upcoming season. He reminded all teams to secure their respective sponsors and acquired their complete uniforms.

Waiver forms are already available at the NMSA office inside the Ada Gym and they will also be distributed in the meeting.

For more information, call Rogolifoi at 234-6672. (Jon Perez)
