The Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association has opened the nomination period for its new board and is calling on the community to submit names of candidates no later than Jan. 10.
The association, during its virtual general assembly held last Thursday, said it will be filling up six of the seven NMIVA board slots. Nominees is open to anyone living in the CNMI for the 2020 election cycle and membership to NMIVA is not required. Anyone can nominate board members and nominations can be made online through https://forms.gle/VhHbXARJ1FSocrRC7. Election of the NMIVA board members will be held on Jan. 15 and those elected will serve a two-year term.
NMIVA’s new set of officers will be facing a challenging task in the first year of their term, as the group will be preparing for the 2022 Pacific Mini Games that the CNMI will be hosting. Beach volleyball is one of the six sports initially approved for inclusion in the program for the quadrennial competition. NMIVA will be working with the Northern Marianas Sports Association, the 2022 Pacific Mini Games Organizing Committee, and the Oceania Zonal Volleyball Association to facilitate the beach volleyball competition in the Mini Games.
Meanwhile, NMIVA secretary Shawn Davis said that the association is looking at working with Oceania Zonal Volleyball Association to increase their referee capacity in preparation for the Mini Games.
Davis said that because of the travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be challenging to bring in qualified and certified officials from Oceania, so the zone is hoping NMIVA will train officials to create a pool that will be utilized for the 2022 competition.
