There will be no recipient of the Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities Award at this year’s Governor’s Humanities Awards, according to Northern Marianas Humanities Council executive director Scott Russell.
“We don’t have one this year for the most prestigious of our awards,” Russell told Saipan Tribune.
The 2011 Governor’s Humanities Awards is a by-invitation-only event scheduled next Friday, Oct. 28, 6:30pm at the Azucena I & II of Fiesta Resort and Spa in Garapan.
“This is a time each year when the council joins with the governor to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contribution to the humanities,” said Russell.
According to him, the council did not receive any nominations for the Lifetime Achievement award this year. “It’s happened once or twice before,” he added.
The award, which may be given posthumously, is conferred to a nominee who has made significant contributions to the humanities over multiple decades.
Russell noted, however, that they will be giving out four awards: Outstanding Humanities Teacher, Preservation of CNMI History, Preservation of Traditional Cultural Practices, and Research and Publication in the Humanities.
He said the final nominees for the four awards werre approved by the board during its special meeting on Tuesday.
“In addition to the awardees, we will also recognize a number of our financial donors and partners,” said Russell. “We’re also recognizing five board members who recently finished or left the board this year.”
