No fatality was reported as a result of Typhoon Soudelor’s wrath, but several vehicular accidents occurred at the height of the typhoon’s pummeling of Saipan.

Department of Public Safety Commissioner James C. Deleon Guerrero told Saipan Tribune yesterday that there have been no reports of fatalities thus far, but several auto accidents were reported during the storm as a result of downed trees and Commonwealth Utilities Corp. power lines.

Deleon Guerrero urged the general public to avoid any unnecessary travel as it is still quite dangerous to drive on the roads.

Soudelor’s powerful winds were so strong that some cars overturned, while several others were damaged at the height of the storm on Sunday night and Monday early morning.

Deleon Guerrero said their role is to provide safety and security during and after the storm.

“Our police officers were also directly involved in rescue operations to bring evacuees to safety at shelters,” the commissioner said.

Some of the operations, he added, were quite difficult because of downed trees, flying debris and downed poles.

Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services’ firefighters and medics were seen helping the Mayor’s Office’s staff in clearing roads of downed trees and other debris since Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the U.S. District Court for the NMI will open for business today, Wednesday. The federal court has been closed since Monday due to the typhoon’s aftermath. There is no scheduled hearing, however, this week.

The Superior Court, on the other hand, will resume normal operations today, Wednesday. The local court was closed Monday and was opened only yesterday for bail hearing.
