The Northern Marianas Trades Institute continues to expand its trades programs as it carries out its mission to provide technical, trades, and other related occupational programs designed to produce educated and skilled workers, and thereby address the labor and economic development needs of the Commonwealth.

A recent expansion to NMTI’s training program was initiated on March 4, 2015, when Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan and NMTI entered into a memorandum of agreement to establish two mutually beneficial skills development and apprenticeship programs:  one in hotel and restaurant operations and the other in culinary arts.

Signatories to the MOA were Abner Acosta, general manager of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, NMTI board chair John Oliver Gonzales, vice chair Joseph Torres, and NMTI CEO Agnes McPhetres.

Both the hotel and restaurant operations program and the culinary arts program prepare students for entry into postsecondary education and/or immediate employment in the hospitality industry.

Sous Chef Bernard Manansala of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan will instruct students who register for the culinary arts classes. This program will help students acquire marketable skills as they examine the industry and its career opportunities. This program will cover sanitation and food safety, food preparation and service, and interpersonal skills.  Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan’s kitchen will be used as the laboratory for the students, who will be under the guidance of Manansala.
