NMTI eyes new class offerings
The Northern Marianas Trades Institute is looking into adding more trade classes to offer to the public as reported yesterday to the Rotary Club of Saipan meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
NMTI Continuing Education director Ross Manglona reported to the Rotary Club yesterday that they are looking at reactivating classes that were previously discontinued due to the lack of a qualified instructor. One of the several classes Manglona noted included plumbing, electrical, welding, drafting, and masonry.
“We were lucky enough to get Richard Wasser,” said Manglona. He noted that Wasser was previously the wastewater manager for the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation. He is also qualified to teach masonry according to Manglona.
“We are going to maximize him… [we will] have him teach high schools and on [NMTI] campus,” said Manglona. “I am hoping to [increase the number of] plumbers here on Saipan,” he continued.
Back in 2015, NMTI reportedly lost their former plumbing instructor, forcing them to close the class.
“NMTI looks at labor charts—we are targeting the areas where we have high CW-1-dependent positions,” he noted. “We are trying to curb that a little bit at a time.”
According to Manglona, Wasser’s classes start on Feb. 25, 2019, from 6pm to 8pm every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. For those interested, Manglona noted that the application form may be downloaded from their website at www.nmticnmi.org or through paying them a visit at their lower base campus.
“Anybody can sign up for classes. We have students that sign up for enrichment courses,” he said. Manglona noted that the certification may be used to supplement a qualification or to develop a profession.
