The Northern Marianas Trades Institute if you recall back on Feb. 21, 2016, was burglarized. The act marks the second time that the school was victimized since its inception. The burglars walked away with items totaling a little over $4,000 in value.
This horrible incident left many in our community outraged as burglars these days seem to prey on schools in particular. As a result of this occurrence, Reps. Edwin Propst (Ind-Saipan) and Vinnie Sablan (Ind-Saipan) joined forces and invested their own office resources toward helping NMTI prevent future break- ins.
Their efforts have now equipped NMTI with a state-of-the art alarm system installed by Marianas Security that should improve the response time on the part of authorities.
Propst said, “I am inspired by NMTI’s commitment in training our local workforce in the trades industry. Rep. Vinnie Sablan, myself, and our colleagues are most grateful to the management, staff, and instructors at NMTI for the services they provide. The alarm system is a necessity in safeguarding the CNMI’s investment and to hopefully prevent future burglaries.”
The alarm system includes motion sensors capable of detecting which part of the campus intruders accessed with a direct link to the security company. With the new system, Marianas Security can then immediately respond to the disturbance. The new alarm system is designed to serve as deterrence as the noise alarm triggers the attention of nearby offices and people just passing by the compound. Agnes McPhetres, NMTI chief executive officer, said, “These members of the Legislature came to our aid at a pivotal moment. The school just cannot afford to continue having setbacks due to loss of resources in its growth efforts. As many in our community may be unaware, the cost of running vocational courses is exponentially greater than the traditional classroom setting, thus losses due to burglary are somewhat demoralizing. We thank them for their continued support as we continue to educate our residents in the trades.”
