NMISF to host 2012 FINA officiating clinic

Kwajalein and Ebeye swimming officials listen to FINA Technical Swimming Committee chair Don Blew during a clinic in 2010. (WWW.FINA.ORG) Northern Mariana Islands Swimming Federation will host the Saipan 2012 FINA Officiating Swim Clinic from May 15 to 19 at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

NMISF is the governing body for swimming in the CNMI and its members include the Saipan Swim Club and Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan.

Federation president John Hirsh said FINA Technical Swimming Committee chair Don Blew from Australia will run the clinic.

The clinic will include the following topics: Introduction to Swimming officiating; Approach to being top swimming officials; Competition conduct; Stroke rules; and Duties of timekeepers, recorders, starter, judges of stroke, inspector of turns, finish judges, referee, and announcer.

Hirsh said the event is open to any adult 18 years and older who is interested in aquatics in the Commonwealth.

FINA stands for Fédération Internationale de Natation and is the international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee for administering international competition in the aquatic sports. Its name translated from French is “International Swimming Federation.

It is one of several international federations which administers a given sport/discipline for the IOC and/or international community. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

It currently oversees competition in five aquatic sports: swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo, and open water swimming.
