NMI, Guam AG’s ink accord on consumer protection

CNMI Attorney General Edward Manibusan and Guam Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson have signed off on a cooperative agreement to enhance the protection of the consumers of Guam and the CNMI.
“Under both CNMI and Guam law, the attorney general must cooperate with and assist other government agencies to protect and promote the interests of consumers,” explained Manibusan. “This agreement aligns with those statutory duties.”
The cooperative agreement sets forth the framework for collaborative efforts related to consumer protection issues. Among other things, the agreement provides that the Guam and CNMI offices will pool resources and conduct joint investigations regarding matters that affect consumers in both jurisdictions.
“Our offices have already begun collaborating to address important consumer issues. For example, we sent a joint letter to the CEO of United Airlines to discuss the company’s subpar customer service,” said Manibusan. “This agreement solidifies our partnership and provides guiding principles for our joint efforts. I am looking forward to further collaboration with Attorney General Barrett-Anderson. I am confident that our joint efforts will benefit the consumers of our islands.”
Barrett-Anderson echoed Manibusan’s comments. “I believe this agreement is historic. Consumers of both CNMI and Guam will be able to seek cross-jurisdiction protections from companies that do business on both islands.” (OAG)
