Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association president Laurie Peterka said members of the girls’ All-Star team will be doing the pledge from yesterday until the day of the event.
Nine from the original 16 players were selected to represent the CNMI in the U19 Girls High School Championships set from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1 in Guam.
“These nine girls will pledge to complete a certain number of serves and ask for pledges for meeting their goal,” Petrka said.
Peterka explained that each player who will make the Pledge is going to pledge that she can complete a certain number of serve inside the volleyball court in five minutes.
“Each athlete will solicit people to sponsor her for how many serves she will make and how much they will pay for each serve is made up to a cap,” said Peterka, who added that coach Codie Sayles came up with the idea.
“Each athlete is assigned the goal of raising $200 by collecting pledges. It is a fun event and it is different. It creates more ownership for the athletes.”
Peterka said all proceeds will be used for the CNMI Under-19 girls’ indoor volleyball team’s travel cost to the Guam tournament.
“The Serving Rally will take place in the course of the day’s activities. There will be additional targets in the court as incentives as well, such as T-shirts from different sponsors that will trigger an automatic fixed amount donation,” she added.
Peterka said they are expecting those who regularly play every Wednesdays and Sundays to attend the whole-day event.
“Mostly the recreational crowd who play on Wednesday and Sundays. They are planning some volleyball and other small competitions like horseshoe and cornhole toss,” said Peterka. “I am still talking with people now about refining the details.”
Peterka said those who cannot attend the event but are willing to donate can email her at president@nmivolleyball.org.
