The CNMI is receiving $999,755 as part of the American Rescue Plan for economic development planning, according to Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) over the weekend.

Sablan disclosed in his e-kilili newsletter that U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo had announced the funding last Wednesday as a means to accelerate the five territories’ economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sablan said the funding will support local tourism, expand infrastructure and broadband, and provide businesses’ access to recruitment, capital, and workforce training.

“In the long term, these grants will help build a resilient Marianas economy through the sustainable use of local programs and resources.” he said.

According to Raimondo’s announcement, all 59 states and five territories have been awarded approximately $1 million grants through DOC’s Economic Development Administration’s Statewide Planning program—one of six programs EDA developed to equitably distribute its $3 billion in American Rescue Plan funding.

The Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands were each awarded $1 million, while Republic of Palau was awarded $996,728.
