NMC’s Start Smart seminar wraps up
The Northern Marianas College’s Start Smart seminar wrapped up Wednesday last week with 48 seniors from Rota and Tinian high schools flown over to attend the outreach event at the Saipan World Resort. The seminar has been instrumental, according to the college, in preparing students for college and bringing a host of them to “Start Smart” at the community college here.

It was the first time for Rota and Tinian seniors to be flown over to Saipan for the event, according to the college. Previously, seminars were held on the respective islands.
The three-day event featured both private and public school students. On Wednesday, talks taught students to “get smart” about credit so they would learn how to use credit wisely. Financial aid information, and options for paying for college were also presented.
In all, hundreds of high school seniors from Marianas High School, Kagman High School, Saipan Southern High School, Tinian Junior Senior High School, Dr. Rita Inos Junior Senior High School, Mt. Carmel, and Grace Christian Academy participated in the seminar.
NMC president Dr. Sharon Hart and the Public Schools System’s Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan also were listed as speakers at the event.
Team building exercises and an icebreaker led by LJ Castro got students to bond. Graduates from the workforce also talked with students about their first-hand experiences of college.
