As part of its efforts to build workforce capacity in the area of social work, the Northern Marianas College is partnering with the University of Alaska in Fairbanks to offer an associate degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in social work.

Graduates of the 61-credit program will be able to transfer 48 of the credits they earn at NMC toward a bachelor’s degree in Social Work that is offered at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

Professional social workers occupy different roles at all levels in many organizations, including schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practice, military, corporations, and in numerous public and private agencies that service individuals and families in need.

“Our partnership with the University of Alaska in Fairbanks allows students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work to transition smoothly from NMC to UAF upon graduation,” said NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez.

Students who are enrolled in the newly-launched emphasis program at NMC will also be able to transfer four social work courses directly into the UAF social work program.

Further, according the NMC dean of Academic Programs and Services Barbara Merfalen, students wishing to enroll in the four-year bachelor’s in social work program at the UAF will also have the opportunity to complete their four-year degree program via online and tele-course instruction.

The first requisite social work course in the program, “Intro to Social Work (SW 200),” will be offered at NMC this fall 2017 semester.

Any interested candidates should contact Thomas D. Sharts, chairperson of the Social Sciences and Fine Arts by calling 670-237-6761 or emailing thomas.sharts@marianas.edu. Students can also contact Velma Deleon Guerrero, Liberal Arts coordinator, by calling 670-237-6740 or emailing velma.deleon.guerro@marianas.edu. (NMC)
