NMC seminar invites 900 HS students
Both public and private high school seniors were invited to attend the 2017 Northern Marianas College Start Smart seminar, where students were enticed to enroll in the lone community college of the CNMI.
The NMC Start Smart seminar was held at the Saipan World Resort’s Royal Taga Hall yesterday, attended by students from the five public schools and six private schools on island.
NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez said the seminar usually results in 45 to 50 percent of high school graduates going to NMC.
“We wish to increase that. We talk to the students about the college and all of the services that we offer,” said Fernandez.
According to Fernandez, the 900 high schools students are roughly divided into 300 per day, today being the last day of the seminar.
“We want all of our high schools to come to NMC. We are here to take care of them and provide them with all of the support they need to be successful.”
Saipan Southern High School’s Song Min Kyu is interested in enrolling in NMC’s computer application associates degree.
“I am looking at business applications as well,” said Song.
“I think it’s a great opportunity. I like the fact that [NMC] has affordable tuition, but I don’t have family here and I am not really used to the environment [here],” said Rota’s Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr. Sr. High School’s Andrea T. Atalig.
Atalig is considering enrolling in NMC but, since here home is on Rota, she “was still not sure.”
Besides being the lone community college in the CNMI, NMC offers a variety of scholarships that cater to CNMI residents: the CNMI Scholarship, the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance, Tinian municipal scholarship, Rota municipal scholarship, Palau State Scholarship, Chuuk State Scholarship, Pohnpei State Scholarship, and Yap State Scholarship, to name a few.
