NMC sees over 1,000 registrants
The Northern Marianas College saw over 1,000 registrants for the fall semester that started yesterday, Aug. 17.
According to NMC interim president Frankie Eliptico, more than 1,200 students have already registered for the fall 2020 semester and the number is likely to increase over the next few days since registration is still ongoing.
Despite online news reports stating college enrollment across the U.S. may see a 20% decline in enrollment in the fall due to the pandemic, Eliptico said that is not the case with NMC.
“We are glad to see that NMC continues to post strong enrollment numbers. Despite the challenges faced by NMC due to COVID-19, the college continues to expand its central role of providing academic and professional growth opportunities and building workforce capacity,” Eliptico said.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, NMC announced that 90% of its 247 classes will be taught online in the fall semester. For face-to-face classes, Eliptico said classrooms will have a limited number of desks to maximize social distancing.
Other upgrades at NMC include the installation of plexiglass sanitation barriers at each office; the retrofitting of service counters at the admissions, financial aid, and finance offices; and the installation of touchless faucets, touchless flush kits, and touchless soap and towel dispensers.
NMC will also engage its students virtually, through online tutoring activities, online “welcome week” activities, and by hosting other virtual seminars for students.
The Office of Student Activities and Leadership at the college has planned multiple online events such as virtual fitness classes and Zoom-based trivia nights for students.
